Apple recently past a billion applications downloaded from their App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch. That's in roughly nine months.
Lots of those apps are free or only a few dollars. Lots are games. Lots probably only get used a few times and then forgotten.
But a billion of anything is pretty impressive.

I hear some mentions about how few AppStore applications actually make money, but I haven't seen any facts. I doubt very many people make very much money.
That said, I think it's a great model for the end user. Reduce the barrier to entry for them and for software developers, and you create lots of apps. If one is truly good, it will catch on.
